"Must be true to purpose.
If not, what.
Our principles will triumph."
--Abraham Lincoln, September 16, 1859.
At the low point of Lincoln's career - after he had suffered a stinging defeat in his election bid against U.S. Senator Stephen Douglas - and before he believed he could ever be President - Lincoln wrote down these thoughts in his notes for a speech at Columbus, Ohio.
How simple these thoughts are. And how true they ring today. Be true to purpose. If not, what? Our principles will triumph.
