Natural Law - What is it? Does it exist? Why is it Important? Save Our Republic #21 The first sentence of the Declaration of Independence declares: “When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” The idea is all but forgotten today, but Natural Law is key to the Founding Fathers' understanding of world. They not only believed in truth and self-evident truths, they believed that through reason we could discover the laws of Nature, and as such we should abide and conform to them. Only by following Nature’s Law could we establish a free and just government and find fulfillment and happiness. The First Principles of the rule of law, unalienable rights, limited government, the Social Compact, equality, and the right to alter or abolish oppressive government are all part of natural law.
